A 26-year-old man was arrested in connection with an alleged attack on a Kahului man, who was struck with a rock and had the windows of his vehicle shot out near Piihana Farms in Wailuku earlier this month.
Kyle Keahi of Wailuku was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree criminal property damage and first-degree terroristic threatening. He also faces a charge of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Following his arrest, police found that he had eight contempt-of-court warrants. According to court documents, Keahi also was serving probation for two counts of assault in 2006.
Bonds totaling $51,000 posted in previous cases were surrendered, following his arrest.
His bail on the current charges was set at $176,000.
The attack occurred at about 9 a.m. on May 6 when a 52-year-old Kahului man drove a woman friend home to Piihana housing. When the victim parked, two men exited a gray low-rider pickup truck and approached the man while yelling at him. The victim immediately fled in his vehicle but was chased and blocked in by the truck, police said.
The woman left the victim's car and got into the truck. The two men, one of them alleged to be Keahi, got out of the truck, police said.
Keahi was identified as the owner of the early-1990s-model Toyota truck. After police told his family they were looking for him, he turned himself in Monday, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division. He said Keahi told police that he was not at the scene and had let someone else borrow his car.
However, the woman identified Keahi as the driver and police charged him Tuesday, Rego said.
The woman also reported there were five men involved in the crime, including Erath Kaihewalu, who is charged with first-degree robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, first-degree criminal property damage, keeping a loaded firearm in an improper place and first-degree terroristic threatening.
Kaihewalu was identified as the man who smashed the victim's driver's-side window with a large rock, and then struck the victim in the head with the rock.
The identities of the three remaining men - including the man who shot out the rear windows of the victim's car with a shotgun - are under investigation. Police believe they are in their 20s, Rego said.
