The Kula Catholic community will hold its annual Holy Ghost Feast on Saturday and May 19 at the Holy Ghost Mission in Kula.
Featured will be auctions, entertainment, crafters, a farmers market, a bouncing castle for children, games and food including Portuguese bean soup, malassadas, chow fun, hamburgers, and chili and rice. Also sold will be jams, jellies, flowers and plants.
Festivities on Saturday will run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and include live musical entertainment and an auction of goods and activities at 6 p.m. Items will include golf plays, hotel stays, restaurant certificates, boat excursions, health and beauty certificates, and the church's homemade baked goods.
NADIA MADKOUR, Holy Ghost Feast Queen
On May 19, events will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The auction will continue at 11 a.m. until the last item is sold. There will also be a livestock auction at 2:30 p.m.
The May 19 festivities will include the parish's traditional free laulau meal, with first seating at 11:15 a.m. Other seatings will follow 45 minutes apart. The meal recalls Queen Isabel's (St. Elizabeth's) piety and devotion to her people in 14th-century Portugal.
There will be a Mass both days, at 5 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. May 19. It will be followed by a procession led by the Holy Ghost Feast Queen Nadia Madkour.
The event is the main fundraiser for the parish, which includes Our Lady Queen of Angels in Keokea and St. James the Less Mission in Ulupalakua.
Holy Ghost is at 4300 Lower Kula Road.
Parking is available at Kula Community Center. The Maui Bus "Kula Villager" also stops at the church.
