A Portuguese Festa will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kepaniwai Park, Portuguese Heritage Garden in Iao Valley.
Organized by the Maui Portuguese Cultural Club, the event will begin with a coronation ceremony, led by Father John Klobuka of St. Anthony parish, where Portuguese children will crown the Blessed Mother statue in the Heritage Garden to honor her appearance in Fatima, Portugal, May 13, 1914. The celebration will continue with a regional Portuguese costume fashion show, traditional charmarita dance, Portuguese songs sung by the Portuguese Association of Maui Chorale, music and a demonstration on how to bake stone oven bread.
Jams, jellies, pickles, crafts, plants, stone-oven bread and items made in Portugal will be available to purchase in the Country Store. Hot malassadas, made in the traditional way by the members of the Portuguese Association of Maui, also will be available for purchase.
Portuguese soup, roll and Azorean iced tea will be available by ticket sale for $8.
Proceeds of the Festa help pay for the annual Maui Portuguese Cultural Club scholarship and the cost of maintaining the Portuguese Garden at Kepaniwai.
