It's a ying and yang thing coming up at Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
Some beer drinkers will prefer the casual, outdoor walk-about venue of the fifth annual Maui Brewing Festival Saturday, May 18.
Others will want to be waited on at the sit-down Maui Brew Fest Dinner that will precede the festival from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 17. Of course, those who want a taste of yin and yang, may want to indulge in both events.
Guest Chef John Memering will wow diners with courses such as Samoan crab ceviche and kiawe-grilled shrimp.

The festival will be detailed in an upcoming Scene issue. As for the elegant sit-down dinner, it will be staged in the scenic Morgado Hall & Lanai upstairs at the MACC.
"This beer education celebration will feature cuisine of the New Americas by Cactus Bistro Chef-Owner John Memering of Kailua on Oahu," says Marketing Director Karee Carlucci.
"Each of the five creative courses will be paired with specialty craft beers by Maui Brewing Co. of West Maui."
The men will be on hand to introduce the courses and explain the pairings. Learn from these masters how well handcrafted beer goes with fine dining as you savor and sip.
Begin the evening with the Czech-style Pau Hana Pilsner, then dive into gazpacho verde with island grown Persian cucumbers, avocados and tomatillos; and He'eia Samoan crab ceviche as you sip Belgian style La Perouse White.
Next comes Big Island hearts of palm with local watercress, radish and shaved Manchego cheese - paired with newly released Lemongrass Saison beer. Kiawe-grilled shrimp parrilla with Kula corn and roasted jalapeno flan will go perfectly with India Pale Ale, American-style.
The entree is Maui Cattle Co. beef short ribs braised and served with Aloha B'ak'tun beer, an Imperial Stout. Dessert is roasted Maui pineapple/ apple banana empanada with dulce de leche and rum-spiked crema with Chinwig on Bourbon beer.
Both the festival and the dinner are fundraisers for the MACC, and net proceeds benefit its programs. You must be 21 and older to attend.
Cost of the dinner is $140 per person, including tax and gratuity. For reservations, call 242-7469, or visit www.mauiarts.org.
