1938 - Entrance examinations for the Maui Vocational School will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the school, it was announced yesterday by Ernest L. Hood, principal. Application blanks will be filled out, and the objectives of the school outlined at the meeting of the supplicants.

1963 - Sale approval of 2,000 acres of pineapple land on Maui for about $1,150,000 from Libby, McNeill and Libby was disclosed on Thursday. The Maui Libby plant, which was been sold to Haserot Co., a canning firm of Cleveland, will discontinue operations after the 1963 pack and concentrate on its Molokai and Oahu interests.

1988 - Something happened 10 years ago in a Quonset hut in Haiku. Montessori came to Maui when a preschool was founded in a one-room class. Six youngsters were enrolled. Today, Montessori is well-established on Maui, with a preschool at capacity enrollment and a successful split-level elementary school.

2003 - A new study on the cost of living in Hawaii has found that West Maui has the highest costs in the state, requiring a single adult living and working in the region to earn at least $14.54 an hour just to be able to get by. For Lahaina families, the cost of living is even higher, more than $76,000 a year for a family of five with three young children.
