This week (April 15-21) has seen only two days where HC&S has burned on mild Kona wind days and smoked out Central Maui.
This is a health hazard, not only with the plant being burned but also the plastic drip that cannot be retrieved before burning. Cane in other parts of the world is harvested without burning, so why is the practice still used here?
Sugar cane is also a very inefficient way to produce sugar - low yield per acre and tremendous amount of water compared with other crops. Sugar beets use one-fourth the water with twice the yield per acre.
