1963 - Matson Navigation wanted to take one of its gleaming "white ships" to make its first call to Maui this year during the festive "Whaling Spree," a rapidly growing annual celebration held over the Labor Day weekend in Lahaina. As that is not possible, the ship will participate in their first all-island Christmas Cruise.

1988 - Queen Ilima Greig and King Kekoa Mowat welcomed hundreds of students, parents, alumni and visitors to green, shady Lahainaluna for the school's 19th annual David Malo Day celebration. The well-fed audience enjoyed one of Hawaii's most beautifully staged outdoor pageants.

2003 - Shirley and husband Oly Olsten, daughter-in-law Linda Olsten and friend Richard Smith held flags high while waving to motorists outside Queen Ka'ahumanu Center. The group held signs and wore T-shirts to show their support and express their appreciation for American troops fighting in Iraq.
