Maui man dies after fall at Oheo pools
A 52-year-old man died after slipping and falling about 12 feet into a pond at Oheo on Sunday morning.
Firefighters responded to the call at about 9:30 a.m. of a man who fell into the pond on the makai side of Hana Highway in the Kipahulu section of Haleakala National Park and did not surface, according to Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
Using snorkel gear, firefighters found the man in about 30 feet of water, he said. The victim, who had been in the water for more than an hour, was brought to the surface not breathing, without a pulse and with head trauma.
The man, identified as a Maui resident, was pronounced dead at the scene, Mainaga said.
The body was airlifted out of the area to a landing zone on the south side, he said.
Boy pulled from water with no pulse
A 6-year-old boy was pulled from the water in Spreckelsville on Sunday afternoon and transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, according to a fire official.
Firefighters responded to the 2 p.m. call on the shoreline at the end of Stable Road, according to Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was in progress when the call was made.
Once on the scene, firefighters found the 6-year-old boy, identified as a Maui resident, at the water's edge unresponsive and without a pulse, he said. Fire personnel continued administering CPR until paramedics arrived on the scene to transport the boy in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
More details of the boy's condition were not available as of Sunday evening.
Kihei association to meet Tuesday
The Kihei Community Association will meet to discuss smart planning and a "sense of place" while also introducing South Maui's new community police officer at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kihei Charter School, located at 41 E. Lipoa St.
