New mother makes a splash off Kihei

April 11, 2013
The Maui News
A female humpback whale breaches a mile off of Kihei on Tuesday. Kihei residents and avid whale photographers Ellen and Robert Raimo reported that they were watching a mother and baby when the mother breached three times. “The opportunity to capture a breach like this occurs about five times a season for us,” she said. “This was my best shot of the year by far.” The whales visit Hawaiian waters from November through May, with the peak of the season running from January to March. According to the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, an estimated 10,000 whales visit island waters to mate, calve and nurse their young.
