I am a professor of surgery and was director of the Burn Center at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for 35 years. I am accustomed to a world-class trauma center and all the facilities of a major university teaching hospital in an urban center.
My wife and I have been Maui visitors for the past 30 years. In February, I suffered a medical catastrophe - a pulmonary embolus (blood clot in the lungs).
With my past experience, I was a bit apprehensive about Maui Memorial Medical Center but, to my delight, everything I encountered was first rate. I was seen immediately in the emergency room and treated with skill, compassion and rapid consultation. The emergency facilities are modern and complete. The diagnosis was made quickly, confirmed by tests, and soon arrived Dr. Leslie Oberst.
Dr. Oberst was the perfect consultant to deal with the irascible elderly surgeon who immediately wanted to take charge of his own care. She exuded competence, eased me with humor and compassion, and made it clear that she was in charge of my care. Not only did she spend abundant time with my wife and me but, after discharge, she called me several times to check on me.
I want to share with every visitor - if something bad happens to you, you should have no hesitancy to head to MMMC. You can be sure you will be cared for appropriately and as pleasantly as a hospital experience can be.
