Beach is the classroom for Paddling 101

March 19, 2013
The Maui News
Maui Canoe Club member Kate McDowell teaches first-time paddlers, including Ric Walter (front seat) of Akron, Ohio, how to stroke last week at the club’s site in Kealia. “We call it Paddling 101,” McDowell said. “It’s just a quick lesson. We want them to be comfortable and safe getting in and out of the boat, and just so they know what it is all about out there. We also talk to them about the cultural aspects of canoe paddling.” She said the new “provisional” paddlers pay a $15 fee and sign a waiver to have an experience they will not forget. “We paddle for fun and fitness,” she said.
