FIRST PHOTO: More than a dozen beachgoers and boatsmen try to push a boat off of Maalaea Beach near North Kihei Road on Saturday afternoon. The fishing boat "Real Hooker" drifted ashore sometime earlier in the morning, said Pukalani resident Jamie Dancil. Another boat arrived to pull "Real Hooker" off the sand, but the group gave up around 2 p.m., Dancil said. The owner planned to attempt to pull it out on the next high tide. Dancil has repaired boats for about 33 years and was called by a Maui County official to monitor attempts to refloat the boat. He said he sees boats wash ashore all the time. "People don't realize if there's going to be a Kona storms or winds, they should be checking their moorings and gear. . . . I tell guys you gotta dive down to check your moorings because the chain rusts and can break."
