Granting one exemption could start a bad trend

March 3, 2013
The Maui News

I read recently that a South Maui hotel has requested that it be allowed to have a portion of its beachfront designated for its guests only (The Maui News, Feb. 23).

If this is approved then surely other hotels will follow. After any hotels are granted the exemption, won't beachfront condominiums ask for the same privilege? And then, of course, beachfront private homes will follow.

If one exemption to Maui's open beach policy is granted, it won't be long until Maui will be like New Jersey, where it costs $8 a day to sit on the beach.
