A kitchen fire in Mickey's Place in Kahului on Sunday afternoon caused $1,000 in damage, fire officials said.
Two fire units responded to the 2:36 p.m. alarm at the restaurant at 350 Hoohana St., according to Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
Upon arrival, firefighters were told by a worker that there had been a fire in the kitchen and that he had put it out with a portable fire extinguisher. In addition, the fire sprinkler was activated.
The fire was contained to the kitchen, Mainaga said. There were no injuries.
The cause of the fire was classified as accidental.
Hikers rescued after water cuts them off
Thirteen hikers trapped by rising stream water in Kailua had to be airlifted to safety Sunday afternoon, according to Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
The hikers, who included three Maui residents and visitors from Massachusetts, Ohio and Pennsylvania, were hiking the Bamboo Forest trail when the stream waters suddenly rose and cut them off, he said.
After hours of waiting and no letup in the stream height, officials decided to use the Air One helicopter to airlift the hikers, from 8 to 54 years of age, to safety.
No injuries were reported. Firefighters received the alarm at 12:23 p.m.
Paddle boarders, rescuers helped to shore
Ocean Safety lifeguards brought paddle boarders and their civilian rescuers to safety off Papalaua Beach Park on the west side Sunday afternoon.
A 12-year-old girl was stand-up paddle boarding with two of her father's friends when wind gusts started pulling them off shore, according to Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
The girl's father went out to assist on a paddle board and was joined by another person in a kayak. They managed to get the girl on the kayak, but it capsized.
Responding to the 12:40 p.m. alarm, all of the parties were brought to shore by Ocean Safety rescue watercraft.
The girl was checked out by medics, because she aspirated water when the kayak flipped, but she did not have to be taken to the hospital, said Mainaga.
No other injuries were reported.
