Mo Maurer, founder of Hawaii Canines for Independence, will speak at the 7:30 a.m. meeting of the Rotary Club of Kihei Sunrise on Feb. 20.
Maurer will make a presentation during a breakfast meeting at the Five Palms Restaurant at the Mana Kai Maui Resort in Kihei.
Maurer started working in the assistance dog industry in 1995 when she and her husband realized the difficulty Hawaii residents had in obtaining guide dogs. They began volunteering with the Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind, assisting in the raising and placing of guide dogs with Hawaii residents.
In 2000, Maurer gave up a successful career as a certified public accountant and decided to devote herself full time to the service dog industry. Since then, Hawaii Canines for Independence has graduated more than 30 service dog teams that are making a daily difference in the lives of their partners.
Hawaii Canines for Independence has also placed numerous therapy dog teams around the state, as well as assisting in the placement of guide and hearing dog teams.
Breakfast costs $22. The public is invited.
