Early-morning fire destroys truck in Kihei
A truck parked on Keala Place in Kihei was destroyed in an early-morning fire Monday, a fire official said.
The fire, reported at 2:58 a.m., appeared to have been started in the bed of the Toyota Tacoma truck, said Capt. Paul Haake.
Kihei firefighters responded to the alarm and extinguished the fire.
The cause was undetermined.

Man nets arrest in recyclable cans theft
A Haiku man was arrested in the theft of recyclables from a storage shed at St. Anthony Church in Wailuku, police said.
Alexander Nelson, 18, was charged with second-degree burglary. His bail was set at $1,000.
The theft occurred Jan. 8 when surveillance video showed a truck driven by Joshua Jacinto enter the back area of the church, near its thrift store, police said. The truck was empty when it went into the area and was filled with recyclable cans when it left.
Police said the 15 bags of cans, valued at about $40, had been in a locked metal storage shed. The lock was cut.
An all-points bulletin had been issued for Nelson, who was arrested Friday.
Jacinto, 22, of Waiehu also was charged with second-degree burglary when he was arrested Jan. 28, police records show.

Police investigate a report of shots fired
Police were called to investigate a report of gunshots Sunday evening near Piihana Road in Happy Valley.
A resident reported seeing a male with a gun who ran into a stream between Piihana Road and the Wailuku Millyard at about 6:30 p.m., police said. The gunshots were heard coming from the River Mouth area of Waiehu, police said.
No one was arrested and no damage was reported.

Man critical after Molokai moped crash
A 33-year-old man was critically injured in a moped crash Sunday night on Kamehameha V Highway on Molokai's East End, police said.
Molokai police were called to the single-vehicle crash at Milepost 15 at about 8:30 p.m. and found the man lying face down on the roadway with apparent injuries, said Capt. John Jakubczak, commander of the Molokai Patrol District.
He said that the man was breathing but unresponsive.
He was transported to Molokai General Hospital, where it was determined he suffered a skull fracture, Jakubczak said.
He said that the man was in critical condition when he was transferred by air ambulance to The Queen's Medical Center on Oahu.

Storage shed burns; $1,500 in damage
A plastic storage shed in the backyard of a Paia residence burned Sunday night, a fire official said.
Damage was estimated at $700 to the 8-by-10-foot shed and $800 to its contents, said fire Capt. Paul Haake.
He said that Paia firefighters responded to the 7:30 p.m. alarm at the residence on Pili Loko Street and brought the fire under control within 10 minutes. The fire was discovered by a neighbor, Haake said.
He said the cause of the fire was undetermined.
