The Maui News

The Seabury Hall girls and Kamehameha Maui boys crews each moved one victory away from perfect Maui Interscholastic League canoe paddling seasons by taking first place in regatta No. 4 on Saturday at Hanaka'o'o (Canoe) Beach Park in Lahaina, while the Warriors ended the Spartans' unbeaten start to the season in the mixed competition.

In the boys race, Kamehameha's Bryce Takabayashi, Maleko Lorenzo, Kauanoe Vanderpoel, Elijah Won, Dustin Tacdol and Kupaa Luat-Hueu won in 3 minutes, 59.17 seconds. Seabury was second in 4:09.91.

The Seabury girls crew of Kamaile Lee, Bela Hamilton, Alexis Smith, Mikaela McDaniel, Hiilei Aiwohi-Kolt and Kaulu Luuwai took first place in 4:33.24. Molokai (4:48.21) was second.

Takabayashi, Lorenzo and Vanderpoel joined Hiilei Casco, Tiana Yonemura and Mehana Fisher to win the mixed race in 4:10.46, finishing 4.38 seconds in front of Seabury.

All three of the league season titles had been secured after last week's regatta. The state championship regatta is Feb. 1 at Oahu's Keehi Lagoon.

The MIL's final event of the season is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. next Saturday at Kahului Harbor, and is to be shown live on Akaku.
