A Haiku man was arrested for allegedly driving away with a woman's vehicle after they got into an argument as they were driving on Hana Highway in Spreckelsville, police said.
Bail was set at $1,000 for David Kitashima, 31, on a charge of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.
The vehicle theft was reported at 3:33 p.m. Wednesday near Ulupua Place, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division. He said that Kitashima was driving the woman's vehicle as they left the Maui Mall and headed east on Hana Highway. The woman told police that she and Kitashima got into an argument, and he pulled a knife on her, Rego said. She got out of the car, and he drove away, Rego said.
An all-points bulletin was issued for Kitashima, who was arrested at 3:50 a.m. Thursday as he sat on the sidewalk along Hana Highway in Paia, Rego said. Police arrested him while investigating a burglary at Paia Pharmacy.
The woman told police that Kitashima returned her car later Wednesday.
