1913 - On New Year's Eve the dance given at the Kahului Gymnasium was a great event. The Maui Hotel gave an enjoyable private dance. There were many private "hops" in Wailuku, and the strains of music were to be heard everywhere.

1938 - The Lahaina Filipino League staged a two-day program in observance of the 41st anniversary of the death of Dr. Jose Rizal. Miss Teofila Villanueva reigned over the two-day celebration.
50 Years Ago
1963 - Program-ceremonies for the Valley Island's first destination-point tourist resort - the $4.7 million Sheraton-Maui Hotel at Kaanapali - were to be held at 6:15 p.m. yesterday. The sounding of conch shells was to signal the start of the ceremonies atop famed Black Rock, entry-way to the 150-room initial unit of the hotel.

1988 - The life and times have been good for Maui's king of the mountain. After 13 years of nurturing the last real Native Hawaiian ecosystem on the island, Haleakala National Park's Hugo Huntzinger is transferring to the Big Island.

2003 - The crowd at the Haleakala Ranch polo field was as big Sunday as it's ever been in its 50-year history. Nearly every kamaaina family and cowboy on the island had come to honor the late Richard "Manduke" Baldwin, 91, the eminent cattleman and rancher who was the leader of the legendary Maui polo team of the 1950s.
