Christian Standhardinger scored 17 points and Isaac Fotu and Vander Joaquim both had double-doubles as Hawaii edged Cal State Northridge 74-71 on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
It was Hawaii's first men's basketball game played in the Big West Conference.
Fotu had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Joaquim had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Rainbow Warriors. Brandon Jawato added 12 points.
Hauns Brereton hit two free throws with 9 seconds left to put Hawaii (7-5) up three.
The Matadors' Landon Drew missed a 25-footer at the buzzer.
The 'Bows were 27-of-54 from field, but only 16-of-31 from the free-throw line and committed 18 turnovers. They led by 14 late in the first half.
Stephan Hicks scored 25 points and Stephen Maxwell had 10 rebounds for Cal State Northridge (9-4).
