Incoming council chair portends ominous future

December 27, 2012
The Maui News

Testifiers on the Olowalu project said they were born and raised in Olowalu, and they wanted a town built there that would provide them with affordable housing. Is everyone born and raised on Maui entitled to the same privilege?

Council Member Gladys Baisa made a statement when the council was considering the passage of the general plan that was inappropriate as to timing and content. She attempted to belittle the marine experts who testified that the reef in front of Olowalu was endangered by the proposed development, and that her husband, a Native Hawaiian, was the expert she was going to listen to. This doesn't bode well for the next two years with her as council chairwoman.
