Don’t blame Obama for problems he didn’t cause

December 26, 2012
The Maui News

A Dec. 16 letter completely fails to recognize the history of the eight years before Barack Obama became president. More to the point would be the 30 years before that when we abandoned good sense policies so the rich could really clean up.

We got into a senseless war with Iraq. Many thousands died. There was the promise the oil revenue would pay for the war. The oil deals have been made with the leading oil companies while we pay for mercenary and military forces there to make sure where the oil goes. Instead of oil paying for the wars, we are paying even more. We went from a surplus to $5 trillion in debt before Obama, which continues to climb largely due to the failed policies of the Reagan, Clinton and Bush administrations.

The world did not begin in 2008. The Reagan administration established the policy of a trickle-down economy that is 100 percent backward from what we need. Even the man who devised the system says he was wrong.

Bill Clinton signed the end of the Glass-Steagall Act, which allowed banks to do us in. Obama had nothing to do with any of that.

I will grant that Obama may not be perfect, but we really need get our heads around to see how the Republican House has not let him get much of anything done that would be good for the nation. I shudder at the thought of a Mitt Romney presidency.
