Christmas marks the culmination of weeks of preparations, including shopping for presents; setting up of decorations and trees; and the enjoyment of parties, parades, and song and dance. The dreams of sugar plums dancing have passed; presents are being opened today. "Silent Night," "O Come All Ye Faithful" and "The First Noel" are being sung or played. Maui families have or will be attending one of the many Christmas services around the island that mark the birth of Jesus Christ in that manger in Bethlehem halfway around the world. It has become the season of giving as well, as Mauians have brought some joy to children and families in crisis by purchasing gifts or dropping some loose change into a Salvation Army kettle. Here are some photos from Christmas season 2012.
Santa landed on Maluaka Beach on Christmas Eve as part of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort’s “Here Comes Santa Claus” event. Santa, also known as Kip Larson, arrived by speedboat, accompanied by his elves, resort workers. Once on the beach, he did a Gangnam-style dance before moving to a cabana for picture-taking with children. Joining his dance were hotel employees (from left) Rie Takahashi, Javin Santos, Kate Cheng, Emma Zhou, Marc Sim and Gwen Taft.
