Maalaea has a problem (The Maui News, Dec. 17)? Come on, stop this catering to the westerners and pay more attention to the locals.
How about South Kihei Road right past Maui Lu? Did everyone forget about the problem there with flooding? What's going on? Resident voters first, not vacationers or part-time residents from the Mainland or Canada.
Why doesn't it go into the ocean? Because it's not supposed to, first of all. What happened to protecting our reefs? Marine life first; guess that's just for Olowalu, huh?
Second of all, if people stop throwing rubbish into the culvert, maybe it wouldn't back up.
The time is now to stop this pampering to the westerners and outsiders and worry about how the local people feel. I cannot tell officials how to run their jobs but can say to take care of the locals first - they are the main concern.
How many condo units are affected by this flooding? How many homes are affected on South Kihei Road? Weigh out the difference - now where is the main concern?
