Debris on roadways increases risk of accidents

December 25, 2012
The Maui News

As of late, when I've been driving home from work or heading to run errands, I've been noticing an alarming increase of debris on Maui's roads.

I've been noticing a lot of nails, screws, nuts, bolts, drywall sheets, broken glass, plywood sheets, broken auto parts left dumped all over Maui's major highways. The highways I've noticed a lot of this continuing to be a moderate to major problem on Piilani Highway, Honoapiilani Highway, Hana Highway and Mokulele Highway.

I'm humbly asking whoever is accidentally doing this to please do your part and clean up your mess before someone - or multiple someones - become a chunky mix of all of that debris due to a motor vehicle accident caused by your mess.

I've been doing the people a good deed and have pulled over multiple times to clean up or attempt to clear debris that can cause an accident or mass vehicle pileup.

Please do your part also and keep Maui's roads clear.

I'm asking Maui County to also step up the street sweeping and road debris clearing during the overnight hours to help alleviate this problem.
