Events to honor shooting victims

December 20, 2012
The Maui News

At least two events have been planned on Maui this weekend to honor the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

On Friday, a walk will be held at 4:30 a.m. - the hour the shooting took place in Newtown in Hawaii (9:30 a.m. EST) - at the War Memorial Stadium. The public is invited to the walk around the track, which will last 27 minutes, a minute for each of the victims killed by the shooter.

Mayor Alan Arakawa will be joining the walk. Those attending are urged to wear green and white, the Sandy Hook school colors, and to bring bubbles in lieu of balloons.

Those attending should meet at 4:15 a.m.

Across the country and around the world, events are being staged at 9:30 a.m. Friday in memory of the victims of the shooting.

For more information, call Brian Nagami at 264-0464.

On Sunday, Maui, Kihei and Wailea canoe clubs will lead a memorial service at the Kihei Canoe Club site on North Kihei Road at the intersection of Uwapo and South Kihei roads.

The memorial service that begins at 8 a.m. is open to the public and will include other canoe clubs.

Kimokeo Kapahulehua will lead the memorial. Those attending may bring flowers and ti leaf lei.
