A high-surf advisory for east-facing shores of Maui and Molokai was extended to 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The "very rough" surf was expected to reach 6 to 9 feet through Tuesday afternoon, National Weather Service forecasters said.
People were advised to stay out of the water in advisory areas and well out of the reach of waves on the shoreline. Strong rip currents often occur in such conditions. Residents also can expect localized beach erosion.
