Thank-You Letters

December 9, 2012
The Maui News

The first VW Sunday Cruise was a big success! We started out with 25 VWs from Wailuku to Piilani Village in Kihei and ended with about 30 VWs at our last stop, Paradise Grill restaurant in Kaanapali.

Everyone who participated commented that this was one of the best runs and the most fun they had.

We want to give special thanks to The Maui News for informing the VW owners about the Sunday Cruise on Nov. 18. Lots of the participants mentioned that they had found out about the cruise from The Maui News. We would like to thank Calvin Kuamoo for taking video of the cruise for us. Also, a big mahalo to Paradise Grill for hosting us on their beautiful lawn area for our VWs.

We will be looking forward to our next Sunday Cruise around February 2013. Hope to see more VWs next time.

It was another stellar year at the 6th annual Maui Open Tournament at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa on Nov. 3. The day started off with a bang, featuring our youth competitors.

Held annually in memory of our departed sister Shannon Ashika Rao-Main, this event is fast becoming the premier martial arts tournament in the state. This year we also honored the memory of our brother Sigung Trent Sera as well as the many brave and noble warriors who have gone before and after.

Our warmest mahalo to General Manager Gregg Lundberg and his wonderful staff at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa for their invaluable help in making this event possible and all of the numerous volunteers, school members and families for their generous outpouring of time and support given in planning, coordinating and directing this event.

A special thank you too to all of our sponsors for their generous support.

Chief Randy Cabanilla, Ola'a-Nalo Eskrima and

Master Paul Main Ohana Martial Arts

The D.T. Fleming Arboretum would like to publicly thank Boy Scout Troop 100 of Kula for a successful "Camping for Volunteers" program in November. We would like to express a special thank you to Eli Resnick, John Williamson and Julian Askov for succeeding with their volunteer projects "above and beyond expectations." They not only hauled arboretum pruning to the mulch site for chipping as planned, they raked and cleaned the trails, exemplifying goal-oriented leadership and pride of accomplishment.

Troop 100's report on the perimeter fence condition and ungulate activity contributes valuable information for continued deer and pig control. Their ambitious exploration through dense brush and wattle determined the best route for an access trail to a future campground on North Hill.

We would like to acknowledge with appreciation the leadership of Scout Master Rex Williamson, and the assistance of camp counselors David Askov and Greg Resnik who made the projects possible.

Thank you Troop 100 for your partnership developing Pu'u Mahoe's native forest and habitat as a conservation and educational resource for Maui and all Hawaii.

Martha Vockrodt-Moran, Program Manager
