As a student in the sustainable science program at the University of Hawaii Maui College, I recently attended a presentation on the subject of fugitive dust and the detrimental effects that it has on people and the environment.
My question is simple: Why do construction projects take special precautions such as black walling and constant water truck deployment to minimize fugitive dust while Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. is allowed to create unbridled dust plumes that cover significant portions of the island with contaminated dust that eventually finds its way onto our fragile shoreline ecosystems?
Are there no regulating agencies to enforce such negligence? We need to voice our concerns.
