High surf expected today

The National Weather Service issued a high-surf advisory Friday for the north-facing shores of Maui and Molokai from 6 a.m. today to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Surf was forecast to reach 14 to 18 feet high.

Beachgoers should stay out of the water and well away from the dangerous shore break. Strong rip currents often accompany large surf.

Man arrested for robbery

A 22-year-old Waikapu man was arrested on a robbery charge for punching another man while stealing his prescription medication Wednesday, police said.

Kirk Keahi Jr. was released Thursday after posting $20,000 bail on a second-degree robbery charge.

The robbery occurred at 4:50 p.m. at a residence on North Market Street in Wailuku, said Maui police spokesman Lt. Wayne Ibarra. He reported that Keahi went to the residence and took the medication out of the hands of the victim, punching him when he tried to grab back the stolen medication, according to witnesses.

Keahi fled but was located at 5:02 p.m. in the parking lot of nearby Kahekili Terrace housing, Ibarra said. Keahi was identified by the victim and witnesses. Keahi agreed to a search, and police recovered the stolen medication, Ibarra said.

Keahi is scheduled to appear at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 8 in Wailuku District Court.
