Janice Sue Riley, 75, of Maui, Hawaii and Mount Vernon, Virginia, passed away on December 1, 2012, on the Hawaiian island of Maui. She was born on June 27, 1937 in California.
Private services will be held.
Janice, the daughter of Edgar and Virginia Benninger, was raised in San Francisco, California, and graduated with honors from Stanford University. During her career in laboratory medicine, Janice managed immunology departments at several hospitals. The majority of her career was spent at Alexandria Hospital, where she was recognized consistently and annually, over a 25 year period, with the highest possible performance reviews.
Janice was an avid singles and doubles tennis player, and won numerous tournaments, trophies and awards during her time at Stanford and well into her post-graduate years. She retained lifelong ties with many college classmates and their respective families as well as numerous extended family members. In later years, Janice enjoyed traveling, reading, bicycling, walking, doting on her beloved grandchildren, and exploring various corners of Mount Vernon as well as the beaches, coves, and other hidden treasures and paradises of her beloved Hawaiian Islands.
Survivors include Janice and William's twin children, William Edgar Riley, of Troy, Michigan, and Nancy Shannon Okeson, of Atlanta, Georgia; their respective spouses, Debra Yvette Gutierrez-Riley and Nils Holman Okeson; four loving grandchildren, Nils Holman Okeson, Jr., Katherine "Riley" Okeson, Brendan Anders Okeson, and Patrick Dario Gutierrez-Riley; a sister, Sally Ann Herbert and her husband, Larry F. Herbert, of Copperopolis, California, a brother, Jeffery Edgar Benninger of Maui, Hawaii, and a sister-in-law, Doreen E. Markson.
