Billy Kemper of Kuau was eliminated from the Vans World Cup of Surfing on Tuesday, finishing third in his fourth-round heat at Sunset Beach on Oahu's North Shore in the second event of the Triple Crown.
Kemper, the only one of 11 Maui surfers in the original 128-person field to get to the round of 32, had a score of 8.94 while competing against three members of the Association of Surfing Professionals world tour - South Africa's Jordy Smith won the heat with a 14.03, and California's Brett Simpson (11.17) was second. C.J. Hobgood of Florida had a 6.50.
Kemper had received a perfect-10 score on a wave in the third round.
