Two student nominees win drawing

December 2, 2012
The Maui News

Two Maui students were recently given Apple gadgets in recognition of their academic and community achievements.

Ninth-grader Mary Jane Butac was awarded an iPad at the Maui Mall Family Sundays event Nov. 25. The Maui High School student, along with iPod winner and Kahului School 2nd-grader Mari Yamamoto, were randomly drawn from a selection of nominated students.

Butac holds a 4.0 grade-point average. According to teacher Jonathan Fernandez, Butac always turns in quality work and has the focus and drive to attain any goal she sets for herself. Fernandez said that when fellow students seek her help, Butac helps them learn.

Yamamoto was nominated by her teacher, Amy Inouye. "A walking ray of sunshine," she finds joy in serving others in school or in the community, Inouye said. Yamamoto is an active member of 4-H and enjoys crafting and swimming.

All students that have been nominated and recognized at Maui Mall Family Sundays events this year will be re-entered in a cumulative drawing for a chance to win a MacBook Pro at the Family Sundays finale Jan. 6.
