Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. is planning to give us a true Black Friday with Maui snow as burning extends into what is usually our three-month break from smoke.
People can write, asking the Department of Health to deny the company's 2013 open-air burn permit. Send letters to: Nolan Hirai, Department of Health, P.O. Box 3378, Honolulu 96801-3378.
As a Nov. 10 letter writer pointed out, HC&S already harvests without burning. Its seed cane is harvested with the new machines which mow it, chunk it and strip the leaves. The company harvests with its existing equipment (knock down with a cat and load into giant trucks) whenever it is not allowed to burn.
Let's extend no-burn days to 365 days a year. Please write today. See StopCane
Burning.org for more actions you can take.
