It was insulting to read that the biggest takers of government funds (Letters, Nov. 15) were the elderly on Social Security. Hey, we earned every penny.
We paid into Social Security all of our working lives. And if we could have invested this money or put it into a savings fund plus interest that we would have earned we would have a lot more money than what the government doles out now. But we weren't given an option, it was automatically deducted from our paychecks.
There was a good deal of money in that fund plus the interest it had accrued which the government borrowed and has never paid back to Social Security.
Plus, it was mentioned that there is also Medicare and Medicaid that we are getting for free. Again this is not true. My husband and I have approximately $500 per month deducted (which is like an insurance company payment) for these services.
Just to let you know, I was brought up as a Democrat, like all of my family. We were hardworking and took care of ourselves and others, if they needed help. We didn't expect the government or any other agency to give us anything. So many people today think they are owed something. They are the true takers.
We are not a particular party either but we are very conservative, like so many of the second World War era. The Democratic Party is not like it used to be, way too liberal.
