On behalf of the Lahaina Yacht Club I would like to thank The Maui News for featuring our Junior Sailing Program on the Nov. 14 front page. This program has been an extremely successful staple of our club for many years and continues to grow.
Ten years ago, we offered two one-week classes for 16 kids each. Today, each of those classes teaches sailing skills to about 40 kids each week during the summer school break. These classes are open to any child interested in learning how to sail.
In addition to the public classes, Sacred Hearts, Seabury and Haleakala Waldorf bring in groups of students. Also, a number of Boy Scout troops use our facilities, equipment and instructors to earn their sailing merit badge.
The classes use boats designed for beginners but offer the thrill of speed and nimble maneuverability. Once the kids have mastered the basic skills, they can move up to boats that are raced all over the world. We also offer the kids the experience of sailing on larger keel boats with skippers experienced in offshore cruising and racing.
We are in the process of developing a new program that will focus on teen and young adult sailing instruction.
Once again, we appreciate The Maui News focusing on positive programs that keep our young people engaged.
