Kemper among Mauians to advance at Reef Hawaiian Pro

Billy Kemper of Kuau rides a North Shore wave en route to winning his heat Thursday as competition got under way in the Reef Hawaiian Pro, the first event in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Hank Gaskell of Hana won his heat as well, with a score of 14.67 that was the second-best of the day. Dege O’Connell of Hana and Tanner Hendrickson of Haiku advanced to the round of 96 with second-place finishes, while Ian Gentil of Paia and Haiku’s Kai Barger and Ian Walsh were eliminated. Kevin Sullivan of Lahaina was in one of four first-round heats that were not completed. Granger Larsen of Napili and Olamana Eleogram of Hana received byes to the round of 96, and Lahaina’s Dusty Payne, a member of the Association of Surfing Professionals world tour, got a bye to the third round.
