Staff Sgt. Galen Apo, 374th Maintenance Group quality assurance inspector, was selected to attend Officer Training School from among 507 applicants throughout the U.S.

Apo is a 2003 graduate of Victory Christian Academy in Kahului. He obtained his bachelor's degree in professional aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2011 and is stationed at Yokota Air Base in Japan.

In addition to being selected for OTS, Apo has also met all the requirements for obtaining his private pilot's license. He has completed a total of 47 flight hours, 12 of those being solo flight hours, and is waiting to take his final exam from a certified Federal Aviation Administration examiner.

Navy Seaman Justin I. Akau graduated from basic Navy training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Akau is a 2006 graduate of King Kekaulike High School. He is the son of Mary Moore of Kula and Maurice Akau of Makawao.

The eight-week program included a variety of training including classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Barrett M. Rayan graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Rayan is the son of Peri Schwald of Kihei.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Marcus K. Morton graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Morton is a 2008 graduate of Baldwin High School. He is the son of Steve Morton of Kahului.
