Seal recovery topic of meetings

November 14, 2012
The Maui News

Hearings on a draft programmatic environmental impact statement covering Hawaiian monk seal recovery will be held today and Thursday in Hana and Lahaina, respectively.

Both meetings, staged by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries, will run from 6 to 8 p.m. The Hana meeting will be held at Hana High School and the Lahaina meeting at Lahainaluna High School.

Actions proposed in the draft EIS include capture, veterinary treatment, transportation and release of monk seals on shorelines throughout the Hawaiian archipelago, a news release said.

Potential impacts of the draft plan on cultural resources, practices and properties are being sought.

The draft statement may be read at www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/permits/eis/hawaiianmonkseal.htm. For more information or to request sign language interpreters or other aids, contact Paul Cleghorn by email at cleghorn@pacificlegacy.com, by phone at (808) 263-4800 or by fax (808) 263-4300.
