Giving away a forest of trees

November 5, 2012
The Maui News
Maui Nui Botanical Gardens staffer Tamara Sherrill (right) helps Makawao’s Sanamy Andres Mau pick out an appropriate native tree for her yard Saturday near the end of the gardens’ Arbor Day 1,000 Hawaiian Tree Give-Away. Sherrill said residents turned out in force to scoop up free trees. “It was fantastic,” she said. “We were knee-deep in people. I couldn’t even speak to people we were so busy.” Executive Director Joy Lynn Paman said an extra 200 plants were brought up from the greenhouse to keep them from running out. “We’re just very happy with the turnout,” Paman said. “It was inspiring to see droves of people come to the gardens to help get native plants added to our urban landscape.” She noted that the native species tend to be drought resistant and require less watering.
