Diver bitten by shark

November 4, 2012
The Maui News

A 30 year-old Kahului male reported being attacked by a shark in waters off of Waiehu Golf Course on Sunday morning while participating in a diving tournament.

The victim suffered severe lacerations above his right ankle, but his injuries were not life-threatening, according to Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

The man and his diving partner had been about 500 yards off shore when the victim said he felt something tug at his leg. He reported seeing what he estimated to be a 15-foot tiger shark, Mainaga said.

The man's partner applied a tourniquet to the victim's wounds and pulled him to shore. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 8:21 a.m.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources closed beaches in the area from Round Table in Waihee to the Paukukalo River Mouth. Ocean Safety Rescue crews notified surfers and paddle boarders to get out of the water.
