Renovation finished at Lahaina Public Library

November 3, 2012
The Maui News

The three-month renovation of the Lahaina Public Library has been completed, and the library will reopen at noon Nov. 13.

The 56-year-old library has been closed since Aug. 14 for the interior renovation project that included floor resurfacing, repainting of walls and the installation of new bookshelves, furniture and a circulation desk.

The $280,000 project did not cost the state a penny. The Rotary Club of Lahaina, with the cooperation of the Maui Friends of the Library and the Hawaii State Public Library System, obtained $40,000 in grants and $155,000 in free services from 16 contractors and provided more than 1,000 volunteer hours, a news release about the project said. 5A Rent-A-Space provided free storage for the 35,000 books.

A grand reopening celebration and blessing will be held 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 18 at the library at 680 Wharf St. The public is invited to the free event, which will include the awarding of certificates by state Sen. Roz Baker, tours of the library, ice cream and refreshments.

The library's regular hours are Tuesdays, noon to 8 p.m.; Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Fridays and Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

For more information, call the library at 662-3950.
