In the midst of a blizzard of negative campaign commercials, congressional candidate Charles Djou is running a positive spot that we think is the best ad of the season.
Yes, we know folks on Maui can't vote for or against Djou - he is running for the U.S. House seat in District 1. We are in District 2.
In any event, Djou points out in the commercial that when he was serving in the military in Afghanistan there were no Republican or Democrat soldiers - just American soldiers.
He pledged that if he is elected to Congress, he will bring that same mindset to Washington - not a Democrat or Republican approach to our problems, but an American one.
The bipartisanship shown in this commercial is exactly what this country needs. The structural problems of the federal budget are certainly every bit as challenging and threatening as a war. Our legislators need to view themselves as warriors fighting a common enemy - out of control deficits.
So, as we are subjected to one final week of mudslinging, let's hope that those elected Tuesday take a Djou-like approach to the federal budget. The other party is not the enemy. Stop looking for political advantages and start looking for real solutions.
Work together to strengthen America.
