C'mon, man. Coach A.J. Roloos, you and your boys have gone and done it again. You ruined another homecoming night for the Lahainaluna faithful by rallying the Baldwin Bears football team to another heart-stopping, last-minute/overtime victory over the Lunas (The Maui News, Oct. 14).
This one was billed as the game of the decade and, indeed, it ranks up there with the other thrilla threes that have been played between these two schools. Goodness, gracious, sakes alive, Bears 20, Lunas 17, in overtime.
There is no doubt that this game will be long remembered by the 8,000 fans that jammed War Memorial Stadium as one of the best ever. Lead changes, big hits, clutch plays, and go for broke spirit on both sidelines. Indeed, it came down to the last team to have the ball. We're all down over here on the west side, but certainly not out, and the repeated refrain we hear over here is, "What a great game."
So, congratulations once again to Coach Roloos and the Baldwin football program, for building this important character trait of never say die in his team. And congratulations as well to Coach Bobby Watson and the Lunas - in our hearts you will always be No. 1. Now, we'll look forward to the state playoffs, where, as Coach Roloos stated, Lahainaluna will no doubt do well, and he's one who should know.
