Police are investigating the robbery of a tourist who reported being punched and kicked and having his gold chain stolen Thursday night at Kamaole Beach Park III.
The 46-year-old from Kansas City, Mo., had been drinking beer with friends at the park before going to get his rental moped from the parking lot at 7:47 p.m. said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division. He said the man was sitting on a moped when he was approached by four men, with one of them yelling, "What are you doing?"
When the tourist said he was leaving, one of the men accused the tourist of stealing his moped. One man punched the tourist in the jaw, causing him to fall to the ground, where all four men kicked and punched the tourist multiple times, Rego said. He said one of the men ripped a large gold rope chain from the tourist's neck.
One man fled on the moped and two others got into a sports car and fled onto South Kihei Road, Rego said.
He said the tourist's rental moped was later discovered to be in the parking lot, and he may have gotten his rental mixed up with someone else's.
The victim refused medical treatment at the scene for bruising and swelling to his facial areas, Rego said.
The men who approached the tourist were described as ages 27 to 35 and 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall.
Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call the Criminal Investigation Division at 244-6425 or Maui Crime Stoppers at 242-6966. Callers to Crime Stoppers remain anonymous.
Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of people responsible for felony crimes.
