On Sept. 29 a fire erupted at my nursery on Omaopio Road in Kula. Flames quickly engulfed part of a building, threatening the entire complex.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Maui Fire Department for its professionalism in efficiently controlling and extinguishing the fire. The rapid response and amazingly coordinated effort spared any further damage. Appreciation also to the police officers and paramedics responding to the emergency as well as to the Maui Memorial Medical Center staff who treated my minor burns. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated, top-rate group of emergency services personnel.
A warm and big mahalo to all of those who have offered and provided assistance or encouragement. You have greatly eased the task of rebuilding.
Ironically, accidents and near tragedies bring with them a heightened awareness of one's blessings. I am very grateful to live in a place where the incredible physical beauty is surpassed by the kindness and generosity of the people.
