Real difference in candidates

October 26, 2012
The Maui News

At the risk of being branded a right-wing ideologue (which, despite backing more Democrats than Republicans, we already are), we'd like to note that Rep. Mazie Hirono's repeated assertion that Linda Lingle is a Republican is true.

So was Abraham Lincoln.

Yes, the Great Emancipator was a member of the GOP. Despite that awful brand, he managed to free more Americans from slavery and servitude than all the other U.S. presidents combined.

Darn, don't ya hate it when you are trying to smear somebody with a party label - and it turns out the father of that party brought real freedom to the United States?

As far as we can tell, Hirono's whole campaign is based on:

* Lingle is a Republican.

* Hirono backs the president.

* Hirono might possibly be the vote that keeps Sen. Daniel Inouye as the head of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

There are no personal accomplishments cited. She is 0 for a lifetime in getting bills passed in Congress.

Sen. Inouye will remain the dominant figure on the appropriations committee no matter who the president is or who controls the Senate.

Lingle is not a partisan - Hirono's only stated asset is that she is a partisan to the death.

At some point, don't we need a senator who makes decisions on what is best for America and Hawaii - and not what the party line is?
