I am a haole. I come from a family of farmers. Two of my granddaughters are one-quarter Hawaiian.
I do not support the sugar cane industry, period. I do support agriculture workers. Sugar cane is heavily subsidized by the government. It has been for years.
I understand why the cane is burned. It is not cost effective to do otherwise.
I would like to see a change to a cleaner crop. Can't we grow something - and provide much needed employment - that doesn't require plastic, chemicals and smoke?
