Probation for man in sexual assault case

WAILUKU - A Kahului man was placed on five years' probation this month after earlier pleading no contest to a reduced charge of third-degree sexual assault of a girl.

Craig Matayoshi, 43, was ordered to participate in sex offender treatment as part of his sentence imposed Oct. 4. He was given credit for three months he previously spent in jail.

"I would like help so I can better myself," Matayoshi said in court.

According to court records, the girl was under age 14 when she was sexually abused in November 2010. She is related to Matayoshi.

Deputy Public Defender Adriel Menor said Matayoshi was apologetic. His family wanted to see Matayoshi get help, Menor said.

Second Circuit Judge Joseph Cardoza had committed to follow a plea agreement between the defense and prosecution in sentencing Matayoshi.

He was ordered to have no contact with the victim and to have no contact with minor children unless he has permission from his probation officer. Matayoshi also was ordered not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs.
