WAILUKU - The mother of two children who reported being repeatedly sexually assaulted by a Wailuku man testified that she and her underage daughter were forced to participate in sexual acts with the man in a bedroom of their Pukalani home.
On the witness stand Thursday in the 2nd Circuit Court trial of William Barrios, the mother said the incident occurred in 2007 when Barrios "pretty much forced her and I to participate."
"We weren't able to leave the room until we both participated," the mother said. "She didn't want to do it. I was embarrassed. I was ashamed. I was upset. We were both miserable."
The mother said the incident followed numerous other times in 2006 and 2007 when she saw Barrios having sexual contact with the girl in the bedroom while pornography was playing on the television.
Barrios, 46, has pleaded not guilty to 180 charges alleging he sexually assaulted the girl and her younger brother from August 2004 to December 2009. Both were under age 14. The counts against Barrios include first-degree sexual assault, attempted first-degree sexual assault, kidnapping and third-degree sexual assault.
During her testimony that began Tuesday, the mother said Barrios' actions escalated as their weekend "recreational" use of crystal methamphetamine became more frequent. She said Barrios obtained the drug and provided it to her, dictating when they would snort it.
The mother said she was at work when Barrios began exposing the girl to pornography at the home within about six months after they moved in in August or September 2004, when the girl was 8 years old.
After confronting Barrios about letting the girl watch pornography, the mother said Barrios said "it was educational . . . that she would know what to do in case she was ever attacked by a male so she doesn't get raped."
"I couldn't do much," the mother said. "It would happen, definitely, when we were on drugs. Things got worse as the drug use got worse."
At times, the mother said, she would leave the bedroom after Barrios called the girl in while pornography was on the television. At times, she testified, she returned to see Barrios having sexual contact with the girl.
The mother estimated that happened twice a week in 2006 and 2007.
She also described acts of violence by Barrios.
He punched her daughter in the face, with her teeth puncturing the inside of her mouth, in 2008, the mother said. "I don't even know what provoked it, but to me it came out of nowhere," she said.
The punch caused the girl to fall, in the process chipping 3 inches of paint from a corner of the hallway wall, the mother said. Barrios took the girl to the emergency room, where she received stitches and Barrios reported making up a story about how the girl was injured, the mother said.
She said she went to the emergency room for two fractured ribs after Barrios punched her in September 2008.
The mother also said she had a black eye from a punch by Barrios and still has a scar above her eye from a laceration and one on her lip from a punch.
Once, when he was on the phone and she interrupted by asking a question, "he stabbed me in the thigh with a pencil," the woman said. "I still have the lead mark from that."
She said Barrios pulled her hair and her daughter's hair often.
The woman said she saw a gash on her son's head after Barrios reportedly hit the boy with a screwdriver.
Judge Rhonda Loo is presiding over the trial, which enters its third week Monday.
